Kitchen Update | One Room Challenge Week 3

It’s week three of the One Room Challenge hosted by Calling it Home, and that means the challenge is officially half way over. The kitchen is coming along, but we still have so much to do!

At the end of last week, I set the goals of finishing painting the cabinets and tiling the back splash (PS – if you missed weeks one and two, see them here and here). We didn’t quite make it, but we’re getting closer. The cabinets are ALMOST finished. I have only five doors left out of 27, and I give that a hallelujah!

The tile project is still ongoing, but I have a good feeling about it getting done this week.

One small but important project we did tackle this week was re-casing the kitchen window and installing a new over-sink light. This turned out to be one of those seemingly simply tasks that ends up taking way longer than you imagined.

Here’s what we had to contend with when we took down the old tube light.

The casing had been cut into to fit the light, so it had to be replaced so that we could install this Ikea light.

A word to anyone who might consider this light (which I would recommend, because for $15 it’s pretty darn cute)–there is no room inside the mount to house the wiring, even though it looks like there would be. The design hinges on you having an electrical box inside the ceiling, so Justin had to drill into the cabinet above and install one. He also suffered a flesh wound cutting the window casing.

I’m a total weenie when it comes to splinters, so I was freaking out over this, but Justin very calmly removed it AFTER finishing installing the window. When we first met, Justin wowed me by showing me a trick where he put a pencil in his ear and pulled it out his nose–almost 8 years later, he still knows how to impress. 🙂

We still have a few touch ups to go, but the window is looking great!

I also (finally) managed to settle on a floor color this week. Last week I set out a few options for paint colors, but naturally I didn’t end up going with any of them. Instead I got the idea that I needed the color that had been in our bedroom at our last house (Valspar Frasier Fir). It turns out Lowe’s no longer carries the swatches for Valspar Signature and has new Sherwin Williams displays instead. So I grabbed Sherwin Williams Green Kale, and I think it’s going to be perfect. Here it is next to last week’s color front runner, which turned out to be too bright, and too blue.

The darker color works better, don’t you think?

I’m looking forward to leaving the cabinets behind and moving onto other projects this week. Here’s what we have left from the original plan:

  • Put glass or plexiglass inserts into to the upper cabinet doors around the windows.
  • Finish installing a subway tile backsplash.
  • Paint the floors
  • Scrape the ceilings
  • Replace the sunroom ceiling fan with recessed lighting.

I’m also excited to see what the other linking participants are up to this week. Don’t forget to check out lots of other projects here!

  1. This is looking so great! I like that light from Ikea… I also have limited head space above the sink so it’s hard to find a light that fits and also looks good.

    • Thank you!! Man, you are so right about the lighting. Finding a flush mount light that wasn’t a boob light and didn’t cost a million bucks was way harder than I expected. Thank goodness for Ikea! The nearest one is 3 hours from us, but it’s almost always worth the trip. 🙂

  2. Wow — you are really moving right along! A kitchen update is a lot of work and I give you kudos for tackling everything yourselves — great job! I like the new kale paint color — looks great and I’m excited to see how it all comes together!

    • Thanks so much, Julie! There are definitely a lot of components to this update. I’m sure if it weren’t for the ORC, I would have let it drag on for ages, lol. Thanks for the validation on the paint color, too. I’m absolutely the worst at picking out paint, so it feels good just to have made a decision!

  3. Such great progress, so many cabinets painted (and I haven’t picked up a paint brush yet, sigh). The Kale Green looks great and is so very similar to the green I’m debating, that seeing it in your kitchen is pushing me towards “team green”. Hope there aren’t any more wounds this week!

    • Haha, cabinet painting is a project that gets way less exciting over time. Glad you like the Kale Green! I’m basically the #1 cheerleader for team green–I almost always end up picking some shade of green, whether I mean to or not. I’m also hoping that everyone completes the rest of the project without any more injuries, lol. A doctor bill would for sure blow our budget out of the water. 😉

    • Thank you so much! I love a painted floor, too, but it seems like there aren’t that many opportunities to really try it out–you kind of have to have wood floors that aren’t in great shape, or at least that you don’t care about ever looking like wood again. I’m very excited to be living out one of my Pinterest dreams. 🙂

    • Thank you Julia! When I was contemplating the lighter green, I definitely had the thought that I might be crazy, ha! But I feel pretty at peace with the darker one. The original hardwoods are actually underneath this flooring and I’m hoping we’ll be able to take it up and restore them at some point. In the meantime, I thought I might as well give the painted floors a try!

    • It is a lot of work, Sam, thank you for saying that! Painting the cabinets has made a huge difference, but I’m starting to get just a tiny bit tired of it, so I heartily join in the HOORAY! I’m so excited to move onto the floors. I’m not sure if it will be this week, but I’m for sure looking forward to it!

    • Thank you so much, Kevin! The window’s maybe not a super high impact change in pictures, but it has made such a difference in person. I’m totally all about the Green Kale paint–now if only I can learn to like the vegetable…that’s probably a separate project, though. 🙂

  6. Its nice to know how you did the Kitchen up, one can appreciate the efforts you guys have put in. That window area is fresh and radiant, that light fixture suits with the set up and it looks to be like that area is smiling and greeting me, there are orange flower and little plants, almost it gives a feeling of a Christmas tree. Yes, a bit a troubled must have been with Justin got that sprinter, I thought while doing these tasks people wear protective gear like gloves, anyway.

    • Thanks, Maria! I’ve seen those cacti decorated as Christmas trees before–they’re actually quite cute that way. Justin really should have been wearing gloves, I guess, LOL. The funny thing was that he wasn’t doing anything too serious with the wood that gave him the splinter. It’s the silly stuff that gets you sometimes!
