Master Makeover – ORC Week 1

I’m pretty excited today, because I’ve been waiting for this day for 5 months. This is true. Pretty much as soon as we wrapped up our kitchen makeover for the One Room Challenge in May, I’ve been planning to participate in the fall edition and take on our master bedroom. And now the day has finally come to put my obsessive thoughts to work and kick this renovation off!

For those of you who aren’t familiar with it, the One Room Challenge is hosted twice a year by Linda at Calling it Home. Iit’s a 5 week event in which 20 select design bloggers and as many linking participants who are crazy enough to take it on transform one room and share weekly progress. It was a ton of fun when we did the kitchen last spring, and best of all it helped us knock out a project that probably still wouldn’t be done otherwise.

Let me show you the space and  tell you a little bit about and our plans for it.

We haven’t touched the master bedroom since we moved into our house about 8 months ago (we’re using the downstairs guest room for our bedroom), and it’s time to make this a proper bedroom. It’s an irregularly shaped space for sure (the walls were most likely moved at some point), but it’s spacious and the trey ceilings help keep it feeling open.

In terms of changes, everything is going. The carpet is coming out, and we’ll either refinish the original hardwoods or paint them, depending on exactly what kind of shape they’re in. The popcorn ceiling is getting scraped, baseboards will be swapped for taller trim, and the walls will get paint (and possibly some wallpaper!).

The design plan started with a rug that wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be. I mentioned a few weeks ago on Instagram that this rug looked to be rust-colored in all the eBay pictures, but when it arrived, it turned out to be a super saturated red.

Red is definitely my least favorite color to decorate with, but I like the pattern on the rug, and my husband loves it–color and all–so I’m going to accept the challenge of decorating a room that is really me with a color that is really not. I found some inspiration that I think will help me pull it off.

(found on Pinterest, unable to track down original source–if you know it, please comment!)

The vibrant read really sings for me in this photo, so here’s what I’m going for: pairing the red with plenty of black, a contrasting color (like this gorgeous mint), and lots of natural elements.

Next week I’ll have a design board to show you more of my plan, and we’ll get a peek at what’s under the carpet! Keep your fingers crossed it’s good!

Now head on over to Calling it Home and see what other amazing projects linking participants are launching today!

    • Thanks, Ashley! I’m much more into the rug than I was the day it arrived. The bedroom isn’t super bright, so it actually appears a little more muted in the space.

I’m thinking the ORC is addictive. That is the only thing that explains why we keep signing on for this madness, lol!

  1. I love this rug and obviously the boys do too! Red is definitely a challenge, but boy do I like that mint color. Who would’ve thought, but if anyone can make it work, you two can, that’s for sure! Carolyn W.

    • Thanks, Carolyn! Justin and I have this ongoing disagreement about who sees color “right.” He claims to have known it was red all along, so who knows. I need to post the eBay pick so we can figure out who wins this one, lol. The red/mint is a bit of an unexpected combo, but it works so well with on that door. I can only hope if works half as well in the room!

  2. Lots of potential, can’t wait to see what you do with it. It’s funny red used to be one of my favorite colors but I really don’t have a feel for it anymore. I’m sure you’ll find a way to “make it work.” Can’t wait to see the mood board.

    • Hehe, Maggie, this is definitely a Tim Gunn “make it work” moment. No turning back now. I don’t know what it is about red that I don’t like, but maybe I’ll work through it with this project. I used to not like decorating with blue and now I love it. I just hope my feelings never change about green, or I’ll have to get rid of half the things in my house. 🙂

  3. So funny. I ordered a similar rug thinking it was a bright pink and it came super cherry red…I was so bummed but I ended up loving it after the shock wore off. Really looking forward to seeing what you do with yours!

    • Christine, a few others have commented that red is a tough color to capture online, so maybe that has something to do with it? Looking back, I think the eBay photos were taken with flash, so the color looked washed out. I’m definitely much more keen on it now than I was at first, so I hope I grow to love mine red rug, too!

  4. So the rug is gorgeous, but I get it. I have one that was too saturated. If you want it to fade a bit, set it out on your driveway in the sun for a day or two 😉 I liked mine better after I did that. I love the mint with the red. I can’t wait to see the final reveal!

    • Great tip, Kyla! I took the photo with the pups near a bright window, but the bedroom doesn’t get much intense light, so it actually looks a lot more subdued in the space. I freaked out a little prematurely, lol. I hope the green will balance it, and I’m thinking a some graphic wallpaper that gives you something else to look at besides BOOM–RUG. I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out myself. 🙂

  5. You’re is going to be the one I envy most, I’m afriad! I had to scrap a 5 month master bedroom plan and I’m already regretting it! At least I can enjoy watching yours!

    • I know, Julia, it is a really oddly shaped room. We got the carpet up and were able to see where the walls used to be. It was a tiny space to begin with, but the way they expanded it was interesting to say the least. I wish I could go back in time and pick the brain of whoever engineered the upstairs floor plan–and maybe make a few suggestions. 🙂 Thanks for your confidence with the rug! It took a little adjusting to the color, but I like it quite a bit now. The room doesn’t get a lot of direct light, so it’s actually much more subdued in the actual space.
