Kitchen Update | ORC Reveal!

Hi everyone! I’m really excited to finally get to show you the kitchen makeover we’ve finished over the last six weeks as part of the One Room Challenge hosted by Linda of Calling it Home. I’m going to get to the pictures stat, but first, you can find updates from the last five weeks here: Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5.

Now, without further ado…

Finishing this project in five weeks was definitely a challenge, but seeing the room come together has been incredibly satisfying. Those of you who have followed this blog for a while know that we just moved into this house three months ago, and since then we’ve spent a lot of time making and living in messes. In the few days since we wrapped up the project, we’ve SO enjoyed spending time in a complete, clean, and beautiful space that really feels like us. I love everything, but the green floors are obviously the pièce de résistance. They’ve got to be one of the best decisions I’ve made, maybe ever.

From the beginning, I’ve really emphasized that we were doing this makeover on a budget, with the goal of staying under $400. Even though we doubled the amount of tile we installed, I’m happy to say we made it! Here’s how it all broke down.

  • Wall paint – Leftover from living room
  • Cabinet paint – $21
  • Floor paint – $35
  • Polyurethane – $50
  • Spray primer for brick – $4
  • Cabinet hardware – $5 ($85 paid – $80 made from selling our old hardware)
  • Plexiglass for cabinet doors – $21
  • Silicone for installing plexiglass – $4
  • Trim for installing plexiglass – $20
  • Subway tile – $80
  • Tile saw – $50 (split purchase with friend)
  • Tile grout – Had from previous project
  • Tile adhesive – Had from previous project
  • Over-the-sink light – $15
  • Flush mount LED lights for sunroom – $60
  • White outlet receptacles and switch plates – $15
  • Microwave – $-40 (Yes, we made money on the microwave by selling our over-the-range model and buying a less expensive countertop model.)

Which comes to a grand total of $340!! Obviously I feel awesome about the investment we made in this space and the bang we got for our buck.

It’s pretty obvious, too, that this project would never have gotten off the ground without Justin’s tireless, unflagging help and support. You cannot even imagine how much I have talked out loud, hogged the computer, decided things, undecided things, bought stuff, returned stuff, left paint brushes in the sink, left power tools in the rain (they still worked though), and NOT cooked suitable food over the last five weeks (while constantly adding more tasks to the project). So thanks very much to my lovely, saintly husband.

And thanks to everyone who encouraged me here! This was my first time participating in the One Room Challenge, and I had a blast! I’ve already decided on the room I’ll be making over for the fall edition of the challenge, so now I have an excuse to procrastinate on it for the next 5 months. 🙂

Now get on over to Calling it Home and check out lots more amazing reveals. If you haven’t checked out any of the other projects before, today is definitely the day!

  1. You and Justin are amazing! I like everything you’ve done so far. And those floors!! I love the green. Good job Brit!

    • Thank you so much, Tricia! You know, painting the floors wasn’t too bad at all. If you’ve ever refinished floors it’s MUCH less work/mess than that. For a small room especially it would be totally doable. And it looks so fun!

  2. I love it, especially the floor…I would be interested in knowing how it stands up to normal traffic/wear and tear. What kind of paint did you use on them?

    • Thank you Marigene! I did a lot of research, and Bob Vila reported that his painted floors still looked good after 7 years, so I found that encouraging. We used Sherwin Williams porch and floor enamel topped with Minwax water-based oil-modified polyurethane. This is the same finish we used on our wood floors, so I’m thinking/hoping it should hold up a well as a regular refinishing job.

    • Thanks so much, Erin! The power of paint took us pretty far in this room, and Craigslist helped out, too. 🙂 Looking back over the last few posts, it seems like it took a long time for things to come together, but all’s well that ends well!

    • Thank you so much! The green floors make me happy every time I’m in the kitchen. I definitely made a lot of decisions based on budget, but that led to some creative solutions I might not have done otherwise (like the floor) but that I love so much!

    • Thank you so much, Brenda! It is pretty true for most of us that if it’s not affordable, it’s not really achievable. We definitely harnessed the power of paint in this kitchen, and it really helped us stretch our pennies. Thank you for taking the time to comment!

  3. What an amazing transformation! A true job well done. I adore the color palette you selected. It feels fresh and fun. The six weeks went by so fast. I completed our entry, living and dining areas in a new to us 30 year old house. So, cheers to us! Have a wonderful week.

    • Thank you so much, Laura! Fresh and fun are exactly what I was going for, so I’m glad to have made the mark. Cheers to us indeed! I’m heading over to look at your reveal right NOW!

  4. This is an amazing project. So fresh and clean and yet functional. I am curious how you only used $21 worth of paint for the cabinets. Did you not paint all of them? Even $35 for all that floor space is amazing. Because it looks like a pretty spacious area.

    • Hi Joan, thank you so much for your kind words! It is kind of crazy, but I only used one gallon of paint for all the cabinets! I use the basic, off-the-shelf Valspar untinted white (Valspar 2000 in High Hide White). It did take almost the entire gallon, but I was able to do 3 thin coats on all the cabinets. I always paint with a paint brush, though. It’s more effort, but I think it cuts back quite a bit on wasted paint. The floors only took one gallon also. We used Sherwin Williams Porch & Floor Enamel, which was thick and gave great coverage, so we only had to do two coats. I think we figured that the kitchen and sun room combined are about 250 square feet, so it is a decent sized space. I also got the SW floor paint on sale–I believe it is normally $56. I got lucky on that one!

    • Thank you so much, Justina! My sun room is north-facing, so it hasn’t allowed me to really grow my plant hoard to Jungalow proportions as I might like, but I did manage to squeeze a few cuties in there!

    • Aww, thank you! They honestly turned out better than I thought, too. I have the paint swatch up in my cubical at work, and sometimes I see it and think, wow, that was a crazy move! But I spotted it from literally across the room in Lowe’s and loved it on the spot. It was like the dramatic turning point in some cheesy romantic movie, and we are now living happily ever after. 🙂

  6. Oh my gosh – those green painted floors, I couldn’t love them more!! Especially with the white cabinetry, the combination is so pretty and fresh!!!!! Very brave of you to paint the floors and I giving you a huge virtual high five right now. I tried to talk my husband into doing that but apparently I’m not a very good salesperson. Clearly I need to show him your kitchen!! All your hard work paid off – the end result is truly lovely!! Thanks for sharing at Best of the Nest!!

    • Thank you so much, Lisa! I’m totally virtually high-fiving you back. In truth, painting the floors really wasn’t too bad a task–it was definitely less pain and mess than refinishing. I need to write up some tips and maybe ask my husband to give a testimonial saying how glad he is we did it…anything I can do to help sell husbands everywhere on this very good idea! 🙂

  10. I was so excited to see this because Ive been thinking of painting our newly discovered hardwoods (kitchen and dining) green. This encourages me to go for it! What is the name of the green paint? Thanks for sharing! Very inspiring:)

    • Hi there, the floor paint is Sherwin Williams Green Kale; however the color was altered a bit by the polyurethane we used. I’d say the paint color by itself is perhaps more blue.

  11. Can you please post a picture or tell the exact name of the polyethylene because we already bought the paint and I want my floors to look exactly like yours

    • It was Minwax Water-based Oil Modified polyurethane. As far as I know, though, they don’t make it anymore, and TBH, I wouldn’t recommend it. It clouded in some areas for an unknown reason. We used crystal clear water-based poly in our upstairs, and it hasn’t had that problem. Good luck!
